Submission Guidelines

Submissions may be entered into one of three categories: long essays, short essays, precises, and poems.

Category 1: Essays

The essay category includes both short and long essays. A long essay encourages investigation into a topic with a higher degree scrutiny, whereas a short essay serves as an opportunity for the author to develop their own unique style of writing. The accepted length for short essays is between 800-2000 words and the accepted length for long essays is between 2000-5000 words.

Category 2: Precises

Precises are very short written pieces that require the author to be exact and succinct. This category requires that the author elucidate the essence of a topic. The accepted length for submissions in this category is between 300-500 words.

Category 3: Fiction

This new category allows for authors to explore philosophical ideas through a variety of different mediums, including: (1) poems, (2) dialogues, and (3) short stories. If you have questions about what mediums or formats you can submit to this category, you are welcome to contact the SPJ via email (spj@torontomu.ca) for further guidance. The accepted length for submissions in this category is between 800-5000 words.
